SCUTELLARIA(Skullcap/Helmet Flower)
A huge genus of 300 or more species of annuals and herbaceous perennials.  Skullcaps are native to
temperate regions where they are found growing on mountains, in meadows, and mixed in woodland
borders.  The leaves are borne opposite and are entire, slightly toothed, or pinnatifid.  Skullcaps have
tubular 2-lipped flowers that are either blue, violet, yellow, or white in color and are borne from the leaf axils,
terminal spikes, or racemes in pairs or singly.

Parent Species of Plants We Offer:
Scutellaria baicalensis - A very bushy perennial that has purple-tinted stems which are short stalked, and
carry the mid-green lance-shaped leaves.  Blooming from early summer until autumn the hairy flowers are
borne on dense racemes and are up to 1" long and are blue.  This species grows up to 12" tall, and is native
to Mongolia, China, and Japan.

GROWING TIPS
Plant in a well-drained soil that has been slightly enriched with organic matter, at a pH range of 6.5 - 7.5.
Mulch plants in the winter, especially where they are marginally hardy.  This mulch will also become a future
fertilizer for the plant.
Scutellaria 'Oriental Blue'
One of the neatest plants to come along in years.  This
version of the Oriental skullcap has tightly clustered
flowers of purple-blue, with a striking white patch on the
lower lip.  A ground covering plant that has attractive
deep green lanced shape leaves that give way to the
tubular flowers in mid-summer.  A plant for the
herbaceous border, containers, or rock gardens.  The
possibilities are really endless.
