Silene lacinata
or Royal Catchfly is a perennial silene that reaches heights up to sixteen inches with a spread of twenty-four inches.  
The scarlet flowers are produced on loose panicles throughout the summer.  This species is native to California, and Mexico.

The Silene genus is comprised of 500 species of annuals, biennials, and perennials.  Their
habitats range from open meadows and woodlands to mountainous areas in the Northern
Hemisphere, with the majority being located around the mediterranean areas.  Our Silene plant
offering, Silene 'Jack Flash', is a top performing perennial that offers unique blooms on strong
stems.
Silene Growing Tips
  • Plant in a well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter or already has an
    adequate amount of organic matter.
  • Add compost to the planting hole to feed a growing plant and to encourage an even soil
    moisture.
  • Before planting make sure the pH of your soil is within a 5.5-7.0 for optimum growth
    and flowering.
  • Silene plants enjoy full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.
  • If planting in containers make sure to add sand to the planting medium to aid in drainage.
  • Mulch plants for winter protection and soil moisture conservation.
