| Salvia is a genus comprised of more than 900 species of perennials, annuals, and biennials. Spread throughout the world in dry temperate or tropical regions. Salvia is at home in scrub-land, woodland, and moist grasslands. The square stems boast simple or pinnate leaves that can be serrated, notched, scalloped, or deeply toothed. The flowers range in many different colors and color forms, and are tubular and two-lipped. Parent Species of Plants We Offer: Salvia sclarea is an erect perennial or biennial that has irregular leaves which are notched, wrinkled, or toothed and up to 9" long. This species blooms from spring to summer with flowers being pink, blue, or cream in color. The variation turkistanica has beautiful red stems, and pink flecked white blooms. Salvia transylvanica - A pale blue flowering sage with two foot flowering spikes and plant spread. Mid-green spade shaped leaves give way to the 2' flowering spikes in late spring/early summer. Originating in Romania and hardy to zones 4 - 7. Salvia viscosa - Spikes of reddish-violet flowers are produced in large numbers over top dark green colored leaves, which are scallop in shape. A 2 foot tall plant with a 14" spread. Native to Eastern Europe. Zones 6 - 9. Garden Tips Plant in well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter in a full sun location. A pH range of 6.0 -7.5 is sufficient for optimum growth. Salvia plants are great for attracting hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies to the garden. Cut spent flower spikes to encourage more blooming spikes. Drought tolerant plants. |
