| Monarda is a small family consisting of only fifteen species, but offers many different cultivars of these species. These plants are found in dry scrub, prairies, and woodlands in North America. The square stems bear toothed to solid leaves that are normally aromatic, especially when brushed. In summer, tubular flowers are produced in colors ranging from white to violet. Flowers are borne in a circular fashion around the square stems. Parent Species of the Plants We Offer: Monarda austromontana - A small flowering Monarda that is sweeter scented(candy-like) than other species and has a long bloom season. This bee balm is a lavender color bloomer with tubular blooms up to one half inch long. Monarda didyma - A clump forming perennial with square stems and mid-green leaves up to 5 1/2 inches long. From mid to late summer each flowering stem bears one to two whorls of tubular flowers, in colors bright scarlet or pink. Native to Eastern North America with some of the first specimens collected in New York state. Growing Tips Plant in a well-drained moist soil that has been enriched with organic matter. Monarda likes to be evenly moist at all times, but will tolerate short periods of drought at the cost of display. Plant in an organically enhanced soil in a full sun to partial shade locality. Monarda didyma preforms better in a location with protection from hot afternoon sun; especially in the south. |
