| Genus of 370 species of perennials, annuals, and shrubs. Widely spread throughout temperate regions of the world. Found in woodlands, streamsides, meadows, deserts, and mountainous areas. The species cardinalis is found along stream banks and bottom lands from New Brunswick to Michigan and down to Texas. Parent Species of the Plants We Offer: Lobelia cardinalis - Clump-forming perennial that bears long lance-shaped toothed leaves up to 4" long in a basal rosette. In early summer the flowering stalks grow out of the basal rosette and bear lanced shaped tooth leaves up to 8" long. In mid-late summer the scarlet 2-lipped flowers up to 2" long burst into bloom. Native to southern Canada and throughout the U.S. Grows up to 3' tall and spreads 16" across. Growing Tips Plant in a moist soil that is well-drained and high in organic matter. An ideal pH range of 5.5 - 6.5 is recommended for optimum performance. Great for bog gardens and pond sides. Build tussocks in bog gardens in order to keep plants out of high moisture soil, in nature cardinal flowers grow on stream banks, in old logs and on mossy stream bank shelves. |
