| Genus comprised of 25 species of evergreen shrubs, and sub-shrubs. These plants naturally occur in dry rocky habitats from the Canary Islands, Mediterranean, N.E. Africa, S.W. Africa, and India. The leaves are simple or toothed, and can be pinnate, or 2-pinnate, and are borne on strong shrubby stems. The flowers are 2-lipped, are high in nectar content, and fragrant in most species. The flowers attract pollinating insects and hummingbirds by the hordes. Parent Species of the Plants We Offer: Lavandula angustifolia(English Lavender) - A species from the Western Mediterranean region that is a compact bushy shrub, which grows up to three feet with a four foot spread. In mid-summer long flowering spikes are held high over the foliage and bear pale purple to deep purple tubular flowers. GROWING TIPS Plant in a sharp draining location that is within a pH range of 6.5 - 8.0. In keep plants compact trim back foliage to 4" - 6" tall each fall and new growth will appear from the crown the following spring. We have found that trimming lavender plants like this results in more blooms over a longer blooming season. |
