Parent Species of Plants We Offer:
Knautia macedonica
is a clump-forming perennial that has three inch long basal leaves and stem leaves measuring from 3/4" to 6"
long.  From the basal clump of leaves rises a tall 24" - 32" flowering stalk with deep red long lived flowers, that stays in continuous
bloom throughout the summer.  From the C. Balkans and into Romania.
Knautia (Pincushion Flower)
A genus consisting of forty or more species of perennials, annuals, and biennials with
scabiosia-like flowers.   Naturally found in limestone grassland, scrub, and woodland settings,
Knautia's are very diverse plants in the garden.  Our Knautia plant offerings are hardy
perennials that combine beautiful blooms with neat growing habits.
Knautia Growing Tips
  • Plant in a well-drained soil that has been slightly enriched with organic matter.
  • Do not provide a rich garden soil, as these are waste land plants, and will grow lanky in
soils high in organic matter.  Well-drained mineral soils are best.
  • Before planting make sure the pH of your soil is within a 5.5-7.0 for optimum growth
    and flowering.
  • Knautia plants thrive in full sun and do not perform as well in partial shade.
  • To encourage a re-bloom or continuous blooming cut all spent flowering stalks to basal
rosette of leaves before they are allowed to seed out.
