Echinops ritro sub. ruthenicus(Small Globe Thistle)
- A compact perennial with stiff spiny leaves to 8" long, and casted in silver
down.  Bears spherical flower-heads in late summer(1-1.75" across) that start as metallic blue and turn bright blue when florets burst
into bloom.  Native to South Central/Southeast Europe to Central Asia.  Hardiness Zones 3-9.
Echinops (Globe Thistle)
Echinops genus contains over 120 species of perennials, biennials, and annuals.  The species
are found in central and southern Europe, central Asia, India, and the mountains of tropical
Africa.  We offer Echinops ritr o, Echinops ruthenicus, and Echinops sphae. species and
cultivars; which are hardy perennials.  These plants are known for being highly ornate,
extremely hardy, and long lived.
Echinops Growing Tips
  • Plant in a well-drained soil that is within a pH range of 6.0 - 7.5.  
  • Mixing in organic matter, such as compost, is beneficial in arid or poor draining soils.
  • Globe thistle plants require a full sun location (6+ Hours in Summer)
  • Plantings of three are more attractive than a solitary plant.
  • Perfect for the back of the border and edging out fence lines.
  • Mulch plants to aid in moisture conservation and evenness of soil temperatures.
  • Side-dressing plants with compost every three years ensures quality blooms the
    following seasons.
  • Divide every three to four years, or when clumps become to large for planting scheme.
  • Cut spent flowering stalks to basal rosette of leaves.
