CLEMATIS
Genus of more than 200 species of evergreen or herbaceous perennials.  Located naturally
throughout the northern hemisphere, the clematis genus is found in Europe, the Himalayas,
China, Australasia, North American and South America.  The Clematis genus is also comprised
of many cultivars that excel in the garden setting.

GROWING TIPS
A well-drained soil with a pH range of 6.0 - 7.0 is of preference to clematis plants.  The
trademark growing statement for clematis plants, is to put the roots in the shade and the foliage
in the sun.  Hence, clematis plants prefer cool soil that is evenly moist, though they will tolerate
many conditions.  Low growing varieties like 'Bells' are happy in full sun or partial shade, as
these smaller bush types shade their own roots.
Adding compost to the planting hole and spreading compost around plants every fall builds
plant roots and makes for dramatic displays the following year.

Clematis integrifolia 'Bells'
Nodding bells ranging from deep blue to grape
purple fill the full sun garden with unusual charm
and a sweet fragrance.  The 2” blooms are borne
in clusters among the glossy foliage, are deeply
cut and bell-shaped.  A small clematis that is used
for ground cover, container plantings, and filling
small trellises or fences.   Unlike its larger
cousins this clematis will stay where you put it.
As, a groundcover ‘Bells’ sprawls out its foliage
and in early summer sends up arching flowering
stalks with radiant cup shaped blooms.  A
vigorous performer that fits nicely in any part of
the garden.
