| A biennial or annual marsh plant native through Europe, Northern Africa, and India. Alpium is a genus that is contained in the carrot family (Umbelliferae). These marsh plants were at one time only used for medicinal purposes, and were not cultivated for food until the seventeenth century. Celery(Alpium graveolens)- The common celery is a culinary delight that grows up to 18" tall with thick stalks and serrated leaves. The stalks are used primarily for soups and stews or eaten raw, while the seeds add flavoring to many different dishes. The leaves can also be added to salads and used as a garnish. GROWING TIPS Grow in a humus rich soil at a pH range of 6.0-7.0. Celery does not mind short periods of soggy soil, but a loamy soil is of preference. Never dry out and provide adequate sunlight. The celery root system is very shallow, and care should be take when weeding around the base of plants. Harvest when stalks become of preference to you, by either pulling plants or cutting the stalks. Just cutting the stalks will lead to more stalk production and more harvests from each plant throughout the growing season. |
| Our Celery Plants Our celery plants are slow grown in greenhouses to insure a nice strong stature(thick leaves, stems, and uniformity). Upon shipping they are freshly dug and banded in groups of ten or twenty-five. Then bundles are placed in a small plastic bag with freshly sterilized soil covering the roots. The soil keeps constant moisture on the roots to maintain healthy plants during shipping. Shipping Window: April 1, 2008 - August 1, 2008 |
