| The Brassica genus is comprised of thirty or more biennials, flowering annuals, and biennial sub-shrubs. This group is cultivated mainly for its edible heads and sprouts, but is also grown ornamentally for its colorful leaf forms(ornamental kale). Cauliflower(Brassica oleracea var. botrytis)- A hardy biennial brassica that produces snow white heads, that are very similar to broccoli in texture and size. GROWING TIPS Plant in full sun to partial shade in a rich well-drained soil. The ideal pH range is 6.7-7.2 for optimum growth and head production. Cauliflower prefers cooler temperatures and tolerates light frosts. Rotate planting spots yearly to help eliminate disease and pest problems. This rotation applies to every member of the Brassica genus. During the growing season make sure to check for pest infestations. A few cauliflower preying insects include Japanese beetles, cabbage loopers, slugs, and harlequin bugs. Deal with pests by either hand picking, or spraying an Organic Rated pesticide. Harvest in cool days of fall for best taste. |
