| The Brassica genus is comprised of thirty or more biennials, flowering annuals, and biennial sub-shrubs. This group is cultivated mainly for its edible qualities, but is also grown ornamentally for its colorful leaf forms(ornamental kale). Cabbage- A biennial plant that produces a tightly clustered head of edible leaves. Grown for its culinary qualities and nutritional values. GROWING TIPS Plant in full sun to partial shade in a rich well-drained soil. The ideal pH range is 6.7-7.2 for optimum growth and head production. Cabbage prefers cooler temperatures and tolerates light frosts. Rotate planting spots yearly to help eliminate disease and pest problems. This rotation applies to every member of the brassica genus.. During the growing season make sure to check for pest infestations. A few major cabbage preying insects include Japanese beetles, cabbage loopers, and slugs. Deal with pests by either hand picking, or spraying an Organic Rated pesticide once a week. |
