| The Brassica genus is comprised of thirty or more biennials, flowering annuals, and biennial sub-shrubs. This group is cultivated mainly for its edible heads and sprouts, but is also grown ornamentally for its colorful leaf forms(ornamental kale). Brussel Sprouts(B. oleracea var. gemmifera) - A unique species of the cabbage family, this biennial produces numerous tiny cabbage head formations(sprouts), that are tasty in many dishes and raw. Grown for centuries and highly nutritious. GROWING TIPS Plant in full sun to partial shade in a rich well-drained soil. The ideal pH range is 6.7-7.2 for optimum growth and sprout production. Brussel Sprouts prefer cooler temperatures and tolerate frost, which actually makes them tastier. Rotate planting spots yearly to help eliminate disease and pest problems. This rotation applies to every member of the cabbage family. During the growing season make sure to check for pest infestations. A few brussel sprout preying insects include Japanese beetles, cabbage loopers, slugs, and harlequin bugs. Deal with pests by either hand picking, or spraying an Organic Rated pesticide. Harvest In Fall For Best Flavor. |
