Brassica is a genus that contains some thirty species of annual, biennial, or biennial sub-shrubs. This genus is cultivated for its edible qualities and showy leaves(ornamental strains).
Broccoli- An all time favorite vegetable plant that is easy to grow, and very rewarding. The thick stalks and leaves make up this structurally sound plant that withstands light frosts, and tolerates heavy wind and rain conditions. Large edible heads are formed on top of the thick stems, are harvested before florets burst into bloom, and used in many culinary dishes.
GROWING TIPS Plant in full sun to partial shade in a rich well-drained soil. The ideal pH range is 6.7-7.2 for optimum growth and head production. Broccoli prefers cooler temperatures and tolerates light frosts. Rotate planting spots yearly to help eliminate disease and pest problems. This rotation applies to every member of the Brassica genus. During the growing season make sure to check for pest infestations. A few broccoli preying insects include Japanese beetles, cabbage loopers, and slugs. Deal with pests by either hand picking, or spraying an Organic Rated pesticide weekly.
