| Our Verbascum Plant Offerings |
| The Verbascum genus contains some 360 species of perennials, biennials, annuals, and sub-shrubs. Found mainly on dry, stony hillsides, wasteland, and open woodlands in Europe, N. Africa, and Asia. The hairy sometimes woolly leaves form a rosette around the crown, giving way to an erect flower stalks with flowers up to 1.5" across. PARENT SPECIES OF PLANTS WE OFFER: Verbascum blattaria(Moth Mullein) - Rosette forming perennial with oblong to lance-shaped leaves up to 10" long. In summer 1" yellow flowers are borne in lax racemes to 6' tall. Verbascum chaixii(Nettle-leaved mullein) - A semi-evergreen perennial that forms a basal rosette of leaves, which gives way to the tall flowering stalks with 1" pale yellow flowers, in mid-late summer. Growing up to 36" tall with an 18" spread this plant is native Europe, where it is hardy in zones 5 - 9. GROWING TIPS Plant in a well-drained soil that is light and preferably not very rich, in a full sun locality. Spread a ring of compost around the plant in arid soils, or fertilize throughout the growing season with an all purpose fertilizer that is low in nitrogen. Verbascums prefer slightly alkaline soils, but perform good in a pH range of 6.5 - 7.5. Easy plants that require minimal care. |
