A tropical perennial that is one of the most valued members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).  Native to tropical
South America tomatoes were first cultivated by the Natives, brought back to Europe from early explorations, and
cultured as an annual.  The famous cherry tomatoes were once a novelty and are dated in cultivation as far back as the
sixteenth century.  The beginning varieties were ribbed and were either red or yellow in color.  During the duration of
the nineteenth century smooth, round tomatoes and plum tomatoes were developed, through extensive crop selection.
The tomato is a staple in modern day cuisines and is grown worldwide.  Today the tomato genus contains a wide array
of cultivars that are many different shapes and sizes.

Kinds of Tomatoes Based on Fruit Shape:
Cherry
- Small tomatoes that are perfectly round, and are borne in clusters on prolific plants.  Useful in salads, as a raw
appetizer, or for preserves.
Pear- Fruit shape is an exact replica of a pear, fruits are borne in abundant clusters, and are tasty in salads, and
preserves.
Slicing-  These meatier tomatoes are ideal for sandwiches and salads.  Normally cultivated for fresh eating and sauces.
Paste-  Plum or pear shaped tomatoes that are even meatier and contain less water than the slicing tomatoes.  These
tomatoes speed up the sauce making process by providing meaty fruits that make thick well elaborated sauces and
pastes.

GROWING TOMATO PLANTS
Plant in a well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter, at a pH range of 6.0 - 7.0.  Sink transplants
approximately two inches below the first set of true leaves; or true leaf branches.  This encourages more root
development and a stronger plant.  Caging tomatoes  keeps fruit off of the ground and makes them easier to pick.  Make
sure to rotate crops from year to year and never plant in the same spot as peppers, eggplants, or other tomatoes two
years in a row.  Watch for late blights, fungal problems in mid to late summer, and pests throughout the growing season
