Genus containing over 500 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, annuals, and a few biennials. Found growing in the northern hemisphere in meadows and mountain screes. They have pinnate or 3-7 palmate leaves, which maybe wrinkled or deeply veined. The flowers are 5-petaled, saucer or cup shaped, but occasionally are star shaped. Ranging in colors of yellow, white, orange, pink, or red, the flowers are the main focus of the potentilla plant.
