| Genus containing over 500 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, annuals, and a few biennials. Found growing in the northern hemisphere in meadows and mountain screes. They have pinnate or 3-7 palmate leaves, which maybe wrinkled or deeply veined. The flowers are 5-petaled, saucer or cup shaped, but occasionally are star shaped. Ranging in colors of yellow, white, orange, pink, or red, the flowers are the main focus of the potentilla plant. Parent Species of Plants We Offer: Potentilla nepalensis - A loose clumping perennial with 5-palmate leaves up to 4" long that are mid-green in color. The 1" flowers are borne on loose cymes and are saucer-shaped and normally dark crimson in color. Growing up to 3' tall and spreading 24". Native to the West Himalayas, and hardy to 5-8. GROWING TIPS Plant in a well-drained soil that has been slightly enriched with organic matter, and at a pH range of 6.0-7.0. In wet cloggy soils incorporate a mixture of sand and compost to help with drainage problems. Potentillas are easy long-lived plants that offer a wide range of color and uniqueness to the garden. |
