| The genus polemonium contains 25 or more species of deciduous clump forming perennials, rhizomatous perennials, and annuals. Occupying woodlands, scrub lands, stream banks, and damp meadows in Asia, Europe, North America, and Central America. Parent Species of Plants We Offer: Polemonium boreale is a low growing species that is native to the high arctic areas of the western hemisphere. Producing alternate lance-shaped leaves which give way to half inch blue flowers in late spring. A clump-forming perennial. Polemonium carneum or the Salmon Jacobs Ladder is a species from Northwest United States. Growing 12" to 36" tall this species is a clump-forming perennial that has divided pinnate leaves to eight inches long, with 12 -21 leaflets. The salmon bell-shaped flowers are up to one inch across with yellow centers, and are borne on branched stems in early summer. Gardening Tips Plant in a well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter. Space ten to twelve inches apart in a full sun to partial shade location with a pH range of 6.0 -7.0. Polemoniums do not like to dry out; and a good application of mulch will help keep soil moisture more consistent. Planting in a spot with good morning sunlight and indirect afternoon sunlight, will reduce water loss from excessive transpiration(evaporation of water from leaves and stems). An overall easy plant that shines in the shade. |
