United States, and Northern Mexico. Penstemon digitalis(Smooth Penstemon)- A semi-evergreen perennial with extreme vigor and hardiness. The dark green lance shaped leaves form a basal rosette, are often marked in deep purple, and are 4"-6" in length. This species is native to Eastern and Southeastern United States, and tolerates heat and extreme humidity. Growing Tips Plant in a well-drained soil that has been slightly enriched with organic matter. Too much organic matter tends to make short lived penstemons that require staking. Loving a pH range of 6.0-7.0 and full sun location, penstemons are easy to cultivate plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies in masses. |
