| Papaver genus contains seventy species of perennials, annuals, and biennials, that range throughout temperate regions around the globe. Normally found in lowlands to high mountains, and are widely cultivated in many situations. The dark green to bluish green leaves are usually pinnatisect, pinnatified, or 3-pinnate. The flowers are usually wide and are bowl, cup or saucer shaped, and very dimensional. Parent Species of Plants We Offer: Papaver bracteatum or the Great Scarlet Poppy is a clump-forming perennial that has mid-green leaves up to 10"-18" long and brilliant scarlet red flowers up to 8" across. A native to Morocco. Papaver orientale or the Oriental Poppy is the most remarkable species of this genus. This clump-forming perennial has green to bluish green leaves that reach up to twelve inches long. From late spring to mid summer cup shaped flowers are borne on strong stems. Most oriental poppies offered for sale are hybrids mixing the species Papaver bracteatum (Great Scarlet Poppy) and closely related psuedoorientale specimens. Papaver rupifragum is also a clumping perennial with mid-green leaves to 6" long and pale brick red bowl shaped flowers to 3" across. This species grows up to 18" tall and is a native to Spain. |
