| The cultivation of onions dates so far back that their region of origin is almost impossible to trace. They were used in early Greece and Eygpt, and are even mentioned in the Bible. Onions or Allium cepa is a member of the lily family and is cultivated for their delicious bulbous tubers and ornamental qualities(flowering tops). A hollow leaved plant that grows up to eighteen inches tall and has white flowering tops. Three Main Onion Groups American Onions- Large yellow bulbs with hot flavor and very good storing qualities. European Varieties- These include the Spanish, white Portugals, Bermuda and Italian strains. Egyptian Onions- The famous walking onion that produces bulbils where flowering tops are normally. GROWING TIPS Plant in a well-drained soil high in organic matter at a pH range of 5.5 - 6.5. In poor soils till compost into the top 6" before planting. Keep check on soil moisture on hot summer days, as onions are very shallowly rooted and dry out rather quick. Constant soil moisture is needed to produce a high quality harvest. A weekly application of fish emulsifier is an added benefit to boost onion growth, but is not necessary in high organic soils. Harvest after tops start dying back by pulling onions and either braiding them or laying them on a mesh screen for good air circulation. |
