| MELONS(CITRULLUS/CUCURMIS) |
| Melons are a delectable addition to any garden, where their sweetness is a summertime favorite. Dessert Melons(Cucumis melo)- A cousin to the cucumber these melons are normally soft fleshed and very sweet, with a lower moisture content than watermelons. This makes these melons a sweet sought after dessert, especially in gourmet regimes. Watermelon(Citrullus vulgaris)- A member of cucumber family, this relative of tropical Africa was brought in cultivation in Europe in the sixteenth century. Brought to the US by early settlers, with improved cultivars making up the mainstay of watermelon crops today. Watermelon needs a four month period of warm weather to produce nice sweet fruit. GROWING TIPS Plant in a well-drained soil with a moderate organic content. Keeping soil moisture even produces higher quality melons. Mulching with straw or like material helps with soil moisture control. Avoid picking melons after a heavy rain or irrigation, as the melon flavor will taste diluted and have a higher water content. Watch for mid-late blights and fungal conditions. In areas where the squash vine borer is a nuisance we recommend nematode treated plants. |
