| Genus of over 200 species of perennials, annuals, and subshrubs. Found naturally in dry grasslands, open woodlands, coastal sands, and riverbanks. These diverse plants have short-stemmed palmate leaves of mid-green to dark green with some having silvery foliage. Known for their long terminal spikes of pea-like flowers in all colors of the rainbow. Native to the Mediterranean, North Africa, North America, Central America, and South America. Parent Species of Plants We Offer: Lupinus regalis - Erect perennial from Western North America that has characteristic huge palmate leaves and tall spikes(up to 20") of pea-like flowers that are normally lilac-blue. Growing up to 4' tall and spreading up to 30" wide. Zones 5 - 8. GROWING TIPS Plant in a well-drained soil that has been slightly enriched with organic matter, within a pH range of 5.5-6.8. An application of mulch is good for winter protection, and keeping soil moisture consistent, which lupines prefer. Grows best in areas with cool summers. |
