| Huge genus of 1500 or more species of deciduous and evergreen grasses from arctic regions, temperate climates, and tropical regions. The species of this genus are found in bogs, damp woodlands, moist meadows, and even by stream banks and ponds. Species are cultivated for their colorful foliage and neat habits. Parent species of plants we offer: Carex comans (Hair Sedge) - An evergreen grass that forms dense tussocks of hair-like foliage that range in colors of yellow-green, pale yellow, and reddish brown. Growing 10 - 14 inches tall and spreading up to 30 inches across this New Zealand native produces inconspicuous flower spikes of deep brown from mid-summer on. Carex ciliatomarginata is a clump forming perennial with a series of rhizomes. The broad leaves are wide and come in a variety of colors and forms of variegation. A low growing groundcover that prefers partial shade and is hardy from zones 5-9. Growing Tips Enriching soil with compost before planting helps keep soil moisture even and fertilizes a growing plant. Divide every three or four years. Planting in full sun encourages deeper coloration of the leaves and an overall nicer display. |
